VIA Rail Canada Pensioners' Association - Québec

• How to join the association?
  • Very simple. To begin with, enrol as a member. This costs only twelve dollars a year for the pensioner and six dollars a year for the spouse or surviving spouse. See below for application form.

• Who?
  • Membership is open to all pensioners including spouses and surviving spouses.

• When?
  • As soon as you retire you are being represented, so why not join immediately?

• Why?
  • Your association represents all pensioners as soon as they retire.  Don't depend on the other person, be one of us and show you care.  We want every pensioner and survivor to be proud to say; " I'm glad I joined the association, I was able to contribute to the success in obtaining what we now have." Your investment of 12.00$ a year (a dollar a month) will certainly help us achieve our goals.

VIA Rail has provided its employees with one of the finest and well-administered pension plans in Canada.  However, there is always room for improvement.

Times are changing for pensioners.  The involvement of the VIA Rail Canada Pensioners' Association is more important now than ever before.   The association is constantly improving its direct communications with VIA Rail's Management through quarterly meetings where the pensioners' concerns are discussed, including proposals for new or improved benefits.

To have a representative on the Pension Council, the membership of the association must include over fifty percent of all pensioners. This is quite clear as stated in the Pension Benefits Standards Act, 1985, Article 7.2(2) which reads as follows:

"A pension council must include a representative of the pension plan members and, if the plan has fifty or more retired members and a majority of the retired members so requests, the council must include a representative of the retired members."

By joining, you are helping yourself and also helping the association achieve its goals, which are so important to us all.
